meet angela (aki) dayag

Hailing from two immigrants and being a 1.5-generation immigrant, I take immense pride in my identity as a Filipina-American. I was raised in San Mateo County for 14 years. I began community work and activism in middle school when the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting occurred in 2018. Ignited by anger for the lack of policy to protect youth from gun violence, I immersed myself in community work and advocacy as a necessity for survival for myself and my communities.

In high school, I worked as a member of Coalition Z San Mateo, a youth-led organization that empowered youth involvement in local government and mobilization. Additionally, I worked as the founder of SMUHSD Student Equity, a student-led group advocating for underrepresented voices and racial equity through mandatory racial bias training and leading teach-ins for educators within the district. I also worked directly with district staff and the Assistant Superintendent to create educational projects to create an actively anti-racist school district.

I am a proud community college student at the College of San Mateo, majoring in English and Sociology, involved as a leader in Katipunan, Honors Project, and Multicultural Center. I serve as a co-president of the Katipunan Learning Community, which has the mission of empowerment, education, and joy. I help to create an inclusive space for Filipinx youth to learn about Fil-Am histories, decolonize, and relearn Indigenous practices. I am also a member of Anakbayan USA, a Filipinx youth-led organization fighting for national democracy and liberation. My time in Anakbayan has radicalized my knowledge of American history and identity as an American. In addition to being a student, I work at Trader Joe's which, I found, allows me to connect and converse with the people of San Mateo.

I am a proud Filipina-American youth activist dedicated to serving the marginalized and underrepresented people. I hope to earn your vote and support with my fellow slate members on Dems United for Working Families. I hope to be a voice for immigrants (inclusive of undocumented immigrants), Black & Brown youth, and working-class people within the California Democratic Party.
